About Us

About Us

Flookburgh CE Primary School was opened in 1971 and is a Foundation School which means that the governors are responsible for the employment of staff and the delegated budget.

The school caters for children from three to eleven years of age. Children are admitted to the main school in September of the school year in which they reach the age of five, giving each child seven, full-years in school.

Our Nursery offers places for up to 26 children; children are welcome to join us the term after they reach the age of three.  All of our Nursery children are entitled to at least 15 hours per week of free-Nursery Education, which we offer over five mornings per week.  We also offer our families unto 30 hours Nursery Education per week; these additional hours are free for families who meet the eligibility criteria however, parents working over 16 hours per week can pay for additional hours, if they would like.

The nursery has its own playground and garden including a variety of activity equipment, including a climbing frame, sand-pit, stage and creative den space, to name but a few!  The children also use the very generous grounds, green spaces, allotment and woodland areas throughout the year to enhance and embed their learning experiences through learning outside the classroom as much as possible – wellies and wet-weather clothing is essential!

The main school is housed in an attractive building which is open in design, light and airy, with ample teaching space to accommodate our mixed-age classes.  Each classroom has their own access to the outside grounds and toilets.

There is a good sized, multi-purpose hall used for our school dinners, Collective Worship, Assemblies, Events and indoor P.E. sessions, to name but a few uses!  The school is set in well-maintained grounds and has a tarmacked play area, fields, climbing frame and an allotment.

We welcome a range of other local groups to use our excellent facilities and especially support pre-school learning and development, including:

  • Activities linked to the area Children’s Centre. The Centre opened in October 2010, is based on our school site and is now run by Action for Children.
  • Hosting local cluster school events

Our School Day:

Our school is open for children from 8.40am with our school day beginning at 8:50am when registration is taken by each class teacher.

Our Nursery and Reception children are encouraged to be independent from the day they arrive at our school.  They go straight into ‘Hill Top’ Class where a wide variety of pre-lesson activities are ready for them to access. Our Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 classes are is open to all children from 8.40am where, once again, a host of pre-lesson activities are available for children.

Children arriving after 8.50am report to the Main office, before being taken to their class to begin their day.

Morning break-time is between 10:15am -10:30 am, with afternoon playtime at 2:15pm – 2:30pm for Key Stage 1 children.   There is no designated ‘playtime’ for children in Years 3 – 6 but rather an ‘active’ session towards the end of the afternoon when they all complete their ‘daily mile’ as part of our commitment to supporting healthy bodies, minds and lifestyles!

Lunchtime for our children in Nursery to Year 2 is between 12:00 o’clock and 1:00pm; for children in Years 3 – 6 lunchtime is between 12:10pm and 1:00pm.

The school day finishes for all children at 3:20pm.

Each day we have an act of collective worship which is led on a Monday by a member of our local church community; we have our Celebration Assembly each Thursday morning, to which all of our parents, carers and families are invited and where we can all share our children’s achievements both in and outside of school.
